ISTJ Description

Often known as “the inspector” or “the scholar”, ISTJs are interested in examining quantifiable data and reference points and in the concretization of those reference points. They are famously conscientious, hard workers who excel at process and policy, logistics, and getting jobs done. They are upstanding citizens who value honor and duty to the institutions that have served them well in the past. For them, reputation is highly important, and they make sure to guard it. They are wary of the future but trust in their own endurance and resilience to pull them through. ISTJs are highly focused on gathering as much information and data as they need on their given subject of interest. They believe in the power of credentials and institutions and seek to become well-respected experts in their fields. As they are so interested in gathering information from trusted sources, they expect others to do the same and always want to see people’s references when they are presenting their thoughts. ISTJs store and remember the data they collect from their research and are highly rational in making judgments. They are critical of what they think and so they need to back up their knowledge with plenty of reference points in order for it to be credible to them. They examine the information they have and then compare it to their own past experiences for reference. However, ISTJs can become lazy in gathering information and become subject to groupthink. When they are not being lazy though, ISTJs are thorough and meticulous and do not form their beliefs quickly. ISTJs are well rooted in their past experiences and traditions and are skeptical of new ideas. They do not get excited by what is new and are unlikely to abandon their belief system. ISTJs generally feel that society is going in the wrong direction and that things will be worse in the future. However, though they think that a storm is coming, they are confident in their ability to deal with whatever comes. They see the future as unpredictable and chaotic and so are motivated to prepare. As a result, ISTJs trust in their past experiences and what has worked for them before to advise others on what they should do. They are loyal to traditional institutions and hold onto the wisdom of the past to protect themselves. When carried out in a healthy manner, these qualities help the ISTJ remain well-grounded and give them great endurance and resiliency for whatever comes. When taken too far, this consistency makes ISTJs susceptible to getting stuck in a rut. They enjoy routine and familiar structures and can get stuck in their ways as they get older and yearn for the good old days of the past. ISTJs are often presented as dry because of their dutiful and hardworking nature. However, behind their professional exterior is an amiable, witty and humorous side. ISTJs often have a great sense of humor which is best described as playful and mischievous. Further, they have a side that is more idealistic and dreamier and wants to be able to follow their passions. ISTJs are not aware of how others feel and can sometimes come off as a bit socially awkward. The reverse side of this, though, is that they have a deep feeling core and a great sense of moral duty that guides their judgments. In relationships, ISTJs develop deep and sentimental attachments to those they love and are extremely loyal.
